Track 5: Breakthroughs and Best Practices (BB)

Session BB-1: Maximizing Your Federal IT Dollars: How to Choose IT Investments that Lead to Agency Success

03/23/2010

10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Prerequisite: None

Evaluating how to best invest your government agency’s or office’s IT dollars means making choices. Do you strengthen IT infrastructure with more energy-efficient servers or increased network bandwidth, or do you purchase software to cut costs and increase productivity for your operations? Do you use IT dollars to increase communications and collaboration, or do you determine your customers’ future needs and invest to meet those requirements and improve your agency’s responsiveness? Could there be a connection between the way you invest your IT dollars in these areas and the successful accomplishment of your agency’s mission?

Jim Whitehead has looked at IT investment portfolio best practices in the private sector and evaluated 28 federal government agencies to see how they are currently investing their IT resources. He also evaluated agency performance and compared the IT investment mix of the highest and lowest performing agencies. This presentation will show you how changing your IT investment strategy can improve your overall agency performance and how you can use the same tools to analyze where your office or agency wants to be and how to best to allocate your IT resources to get there.
