Track 3: Next Generation Government: Gov 2.0 and Beyond (GT)

Session GT-3: Wading into Open Government through Online Dialogues – Strategies, Advantages and Legal Considerations

03/24/2010

10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Prerequisite: None

The Open Government Directive released in December of 2009 provides deadline for action in the President’s commitment to a government that is transparent and collaborative. Besides directing agencies to create a culture of open government and improving the quality of government information, the Directive also requires agencies to stand up an open government portion of their website that includes a mechanism for the public to give feedback to the agency. Many agencies have already delved into the area of public engagement. Some have done so in an online forum with their employees, others have done so with their constituencies. Now, a new level of complexity is rapidly emerging in how government is engaging with their stakeholders to gather information and refine ideas. This panel will examine some of the latest citizen engagement initiatives in government and the private sector and share strategies, approaches and lessons learned that resulted from their engagements.
